“For me, teaching is understanding what moves my students, their personalities, their strengths and weaknesses. I try to help reinforce each unique person so they can benefit to their fullest potential, helping them to become citizens of the world as they encounter unique cultures and experiences through Spanish language.”

Maria Teresa Calvo Martinez was born and raised in the North Madrid neighborhood of Mirasierra, where she received a Catholic education at Santa Joaquina de Vedruna Country Day School. Later she went to college and obtained four bachelor’s degrees in journalism, communications, humanities at Universidad Carlos III and philosophy at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She also has two master’s degrees in education and cultural studies from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She became a high school teacher after graduating and rose to the top of the Spanish Language department at the Salesian school Escuelas Santísimo Sacramento. After marrying her husband, she moved to New York in 2017 and worked as a substitute teacher and private tutor until she found her new home here at Poly Prep, where she has been teaching different levels in the Upper School. She completed her doctorate in cultural studies and comparative literature in 2020. She was awarded cum laude for her thesis on movie director Christopher Nolan. She enjoys traveling, reading, watching independent films, and of course, Spanish cuisine and Real Madrid C.F.
