The Poet Laureate of Brooklyn, Tina Chang, left a strong impression on students at Poly. She spoke to Upper School students in Chapel, then spent the day with Upper School English and writing classes, reading her work and describing her approach to writing poetry.
Chang revealed that most of her writing these days is done on her phone so she won’t lose her train of thought when she gets inspired. She told students that her poems often begin with a few words or an image, and then she gives them “the space and time to become something bigger.” To “maintain the wonder” of writing she cannot have a strict framework, but allows the creation to happen freely.
